When I was a kid, we called him Robotnik, and we could take him seriously. Eggman's a punk.

This might provoke the more purist gamer fans of Sonic, but the best Robotnik is the SatAM version. He was pure evil, had a cool voice, and didn't have any issues with ruling the world. He turned most cute cartoon animals into mindless robots and those who survived were subjected to a life of war and premature middle-agedness.

In the games, Eggman suffices as an opponent to fight, but as an actual character?...no. Maybe if he lost the fake Scottish accent and WC Fields nose, and actually made good on his efforts to take over the world, I'd respect him a a person.
He looks kinda cool in the 360 game though...but I've heard the games not that good

To make one thing clear. I don't hate Eggman with a burning passion. It's just that Ivo Robotnik is so much cooler than he is. It's like comparing the John Woo movies made in Hong Kong with the ones he made here.

Yeah, the SatAM Robotnik was awesome. Reminds me of Dr. Claw from the old Inspector Gadget cartoons. ^_^

In the games they're the same but somewhere along the line they changed the name in the American versions.

The Robotnik I'm referring to is from the cartoon, and his characterization was completely different.

Again, I agree completely. Dr. Ivo Robotnik from SatAM is by far the best incarnation of the mad doctor ever. His voice was quite awesome, his personality couldn't be beaten, and he was just incredible. I particularly prefer him to the worthless Eggman that has mysteriously replaced him in the comics. I never thought I'd see the day.
