THE AILU

Biology
The Ailu are a race of sapient gastropods. A naturally hermaphroditic species, they have no actual gender, but most of them look and sound female to other races, so they’re often referred to with female pronouns. Their bodies store a slimy substance which can be expelled when a specimen feels threatened. The slime renders the Ailu slippery and will congeal in a few seconds, leaving the would-be predator covered in a sticky foam that will distract it. If it is not expelled regularly, the slime will build up indefinitely. Since their society has advanced beyond having to worry about predators, all the extra weight is considered very attractive. The one in the picture is a particularly hefty specimen. Although their weight is often laughed at, the Ailu are considered a rather graceful and beautiful race.
As a result of this extra weight, most Ailu cannot move well under their own power, so most of them have cybernetic implants for locomotion. Having evolved from a parasitic species that would latch onto another creature and control its movements, they have a very versatile nervous system which allows them to adapt to different means of conveyance. Many have spider-like implants like above, but some have repulsors and even some walk upright on two prosthetic legs.
Despite being intelligent, the Ailu do not have a central nervous system as most people think. The result is that one can survive and still be conscious with its head cut off.

Culture
Although different Ailu have different attitudes on morality, art and religion, the race is overall very scientific and artistic. Their artwork and technology is highly sought after. They tend to be curious and friendly. They’re lovers, not fighters. Although contact with other worlds has forced them to develop a grand military, strategy is not their strong suit. If they cannot negotiate, they prefer to overwhelm their enemies with force and technology rather than subtlety. It’s often joked that an Ailu will design the best laser gun ever made and then attempt to play music with it. Even with a grand spacefleet, the Ailu took a while to realize the importance of an infantry, and even then will hire other species as mercenaries. Sometimes they send their own kind to be trained in strategy with other races.

I managed to make one drawing on my day off. At least I got some housecleaning done. I don’t expect much free time as there are manpower issues at work I need to look for a new job.
