The canon of the comics states that Knuckles and Julie do not really get married they just stay together, and have a daughter.
I'm sure this was meant as a compromise, under the logic that, if they didn't get married, people who don't support the pairing could have the comfort that the deal is not sealed. Instead it just doesn't satisfy anyone. That's my opinion.
-One of the justifications for this is that Knuckles is recovering from his own parents' divorce and does not want to repeat their mistake. It's an understandable feeling, but if he truly loves Julie he can get past that. They're not his parents.
-Another justification is that Julie-Su would not believe in marriage because she's some sort of rebel, I guess. However, I believe that Julie would not have the same misgivings toward matrimony that Knuckles has. She's a screwed-up person who's been through tough times, but a bright spot in her life was living with her happily married adoptive parents. She's seen more of the good side of it.
They'd also consider any potential children they'd have (Lara-Su). Even if they had a distaste toward getting married, they'd realize that their little stand wouldn't be worth making their kids be known bastards.
It would be fine if it they were put in some dating limbo, with an unclear outcome (that would be a good compromise), but instead it was said that they just stay together without getting married.
Beatiful! Some people may not get it and say KNUCKLES/JULIE-SU is fake and Lara-Su is just invent from the fans(This guys dont even know Julie-Su is jsut heard and say things)
If you love each other, and intend to stay by each other's side, then the only purpose marriage serves is legal issues when it comes time to claim inheritance. I think people put far too much emphasis into a simple title. Marriage is not what defines love.
That said, I don't really care either way whether or not they're married. I think that from a legal standpoint marriage is the smart thing, but I also support those who choose otherwise.
Furthermore, being a bastard really isn't a bad thing, especially not in this day and age, so I find that an extremely poor reason. Again, the only purpose marriage might serve here, in the case of children, is legal purposes and perhaps the avoidance of awkwardness with last names - which is avoided in this case, as Lara-Su has the -Su suffix, and in their culture the suffix in female names appears to be their equivalent to a family name.
Knux/Julie forever!

Also i heard Julie Sue doesn't believe that love should have a piece of paper or something 0_o
