I hate awards shows.

Well, whenever I go on Imdb, the poll is another repetitive Golden Globes/Oscars (seriously, how many times do people have to select Dark Knight before these guys get the point) based question, so I guess that Awards seasons coming up.

I hate award shows. I don't understand why people give a s*** about what a few people with some pretense of being authoritative think the best movie is. I mostly trust my own taste, but partially also the consensus of discerning cinephiles.

The Oscars - seen as the ultimate award show despite consistently failing to recognize innovation in its Best Picture category and being dependent on politics and previous award shows. Notorious for snubbing entire genres of movies. Its prejudice against genre films and comedies is obvious. Despite having priding itself on its forward-thinking politics (it often hands out awards to undeserving with the right politics), it still lives in an earlier time when genre movies were justly considered B-movies. It has even placed Animated Movies in its own ghetto award due to their close-mindedness (btw, the two best movies I saw from 2007 were Ratatouille and Persepolis, both animated). In terms of music, it has a tendency to award "Best Song" to sappy, forgettable pop songs, rather than anything memorable and enjoyable.
-Eschewed Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back for Best Picture.
-Gave James Cameron's formulaic sell out movie Titanic Best Picture, even though his scifi action movies (Avatar notwithstanding) showed far more innovation and originality.
-DIDN'T EVEN NOMINATE Daft Punk for their amazing work on Tron Legacy.

Populist Award Shows (such as MTV People's Choice) are the opposite extreme.

Golden Globes - enough has been said about them, but I must point out that they nominated an award to the atrocious, horrible Miley Cyrus pseudo-country song from Bolt.

Razzies - The razzies are mostly just a wannabe iconoclast award attempting to satiate the disaffected. Their pretense that they're not full of it because they nominate the "worst" movies makes them more full of it than any other award show. Every year they let us know that they have no sense of humor by nominating Will Ferrell for worst actor.
